CSP ENDOWER ($100,000)

(2) Venice, Padua and Florence: You and a guest join Marc Michael Epstein of Vassar College for a spectacular and luxurious 10-day trip to Jewish Italy, including Venice, Padua and Florence (includes 5-star hotels and round-trip business class flights). See Italy as you have never seen it before with a premier guide! The trip will focus on the urban history of the first ghetto ever created, the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, underscoring the wealth of relationships between the Jews and civic society throughout the history of their long residence in the lagoon, in the Veneto, and in Europe and the Mediterranean. It will recount the story of the Ghetto’s settlement, its growth, its architecture, its society, its trades, its daily life, and the relationships between the Jewish minority and the city at large, within the context of its relationships with other Jewish settlements in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Questions of communal identity and cross-cultural identification will be explored, as Venice was a crossroads between Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Levantine and “native Italian” Jewish culture. And material culture will play a crucial role—we’ll discuss everything from the manner in which the unique Jewish silver ceremonial objects created in Venice fuse religious customs and traditions with art, craftsmanship and culture to the ways in which Jews were depicted in art produced for Christians in Venice. And we will explore the extraordinary importance of Jewish printing in the city in which the Talmud— the great corpus of Jewish law and lore, and guide to Jewish life worldwide— was first printed!

Highlights include

A sunset boat excursion introduction to Venice with Dr. Barbara Del Mercato of Beit Venezia, the Venice International Center for Jewish Studies; A walking orientation to the natural and urban landscape of Venice; A private tour of the Jewish Museum and the Scuola Tedesca [German-Ashkenazi Synagogue], the Scuola Spagnola [Spanish and Portugese-Western Sephardi Synagogue], the Scuola Italiana [Italian Synagogue], the Scuola Canton [“Corner” Synagogue, known by location rather than community, but serving Ashkenazim mostly.] with Professor Epstein; A conversation about the Jewish Community and the Ghetto, its culture and literature, with Professor Shaul Bassi, Department of English and Comparative Literature, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice; An exclusive tour of the Doge’s Palace and Basilica of San Marco, its Treasury, the Golden Altar of San Marco and the Cathedral Museum with a gifted archaeologist; Shabbat services in the Scuola Levantina [Levantine-Ottoman Turkish Synagogue] which can only be seen during services; Shabbat Dinner together with members of the Venice Community including Chief Rabbi Babout, his wife Lenore Rosenberg (USA) and local community leaders; An amazing guided tour by Professor Epstein to the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia; Rare in-depth exploration of the Lido Jewish Cemetery with retired sea captain and head of the Jewish Burial Society Mr. Aldo Izzo; Tour of Shakespeare’s Venice with Professor Shaul Bassi; In addition, we will travel to see Padova’s magnificent Scrovegni Chapel, with frescos by Giotto; The Padova visit will include a visit to Padova’s rarely seen Jewish Cemetery, Synagogue and Museum, with tour by Dr. Simonetta Lazzaretto; We will also visit Florence, where Professor Epstein will guide us on a visit to the Uffizi Museum, Synagogue and Jewish Museum, as well as the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, (Michelangelo’s David) and the Church of Santa Maria Novella.
