Money Talks: Jewish History Through Coins. Enjoy a private, in-person gathering on Wednesday September 2nd, 2026 with CSP Founder Arie Katz for a fascinating exploration of remarkable coins from the CSP collection, each opening a window into Jewish history. Highlights include coins from the age of Alexander the Great and his successors, which shaped the Jewish encounter with Hellenism, an original Tyrian half shekel from the Second Temple period associated with the Temple tax and Jerusalem’s money changers, examples tracing the evolution of the shekel, currencies used by Ashkenazi Jews in the medieval SHUM cities, and coins from the Russian Empire that entered Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement. There is a midrashic tradition that this set of broken tablets were not discarded but kept in the holy ark with the second set. Hanging onto the broken could be a painful image past. But rabbinically, this image is evoked when discussing the importance of valuing an older person.
